Starting a student atheist group - advise please!
Submitted by Joemama on April 26, 2009 - 9:41pm.
Hello,
I am currently a Junior in college. I was looking at the large array of student groups available at my college, and I realized there is no student group for atheism. Let me emphasize – we have student groups for everything ranging from groups for religions to ones for students to play bridge together, so, naturally, I was annoyed/disturbed that there was no atheist group. I have decided to make it my mission to start an atheist group on campus, but I need some help/advice, and I was hoping this would be a good place to receive it.
Saints, prayers and absurdity...personal story, humor.
Submitted by Brian37 on April 25, 2009 - 7:48pm.So I am having dinner with my mom at her retirement place. Every week I bring her dog to visit her, which I now take care of. The dog is very friendly, and my mom likes to introduce her to everyone.
Anyway, we run into a couple of her home mates with the dog. They comment on how sweet the dog is and ask why the dog has a slight limp. I explain that the dog is old and has arthritis.
THEN, one of the ladies says she will say a prayer, but didn't know which Saint to pray to ABOUT THE DOG'S arthritis. She asked if my mom would look up the particular Saint on the internet that answers such prayers about arthritis. I KID YOU NOT!
So just for fun when I got home, googled it. "Saint James" Patron saint of arthritis, and called my mom so she could tell this "well wisher" the "correct Saint". We would not want to fuck that up.
Anywho, it does get better. Later my mom calls me, and appearently she had been conversing about this subject with another friend there, who agreed with me how silly it was and decided to call me back with another question about "Saints"
My mom called me back(just to joke about the situation) asking to know who the patron Saint of banannas was.
My mom does believe, but she sure does have one heck of a sense of humor. That cheered me up!

To bad for this dip wad, OUR FIRST AMENDMENT says "Freedom of speech and freedom of religion" AND ALSO "NO RELIGIOUS TEST"!
AND not to mention the inspiration for the First Amendment was the Virgina Religious Freedom act, written by Thomas Jefferson, whom EQUATED THE BIRTH AND DEATH OF JESUS AS BEING IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS MINERVA BEING BORN OUT OF THE BRAIN OF JUPITER".
It burn's the Christian's buttons that OUR constitution does not entitle them to a monopoly of power at the expense of excluding all others to the back of the bus.
Anyone run into the "Jesus 's family tomb found" before.

An Atheist Hymn -- new words for great old tune
Submitted by blackdog on April 5, 2009 - 7:31am.Take a Smarter Walk With Me;
Atheist hymn sung to the Christian gospel tune Closer Walk with Thee Here's a sample tune:
(please help with more new lyrics!)
http://www.mamarocks.com/closer_walk_with_thee.htm
(chorus)
Take a smarter walk with me
Godless thinkers make this plea
Open up your eyes and see
Use your mind to set you free
All our gods were made by men
With strange religions way back when
We've grown up a lot since then
It’s time to sing the non-believers hymn
There’s no god up in the sky
No devil burning souls below
No angels watching from on high
Just simple folk down here like you and I
All gods are weak but you are strong
You decide what’s right or wrong
Don’t be afraid, come walk along
Don’t be afraid to sing this song
You’re no puppet on a string
You’re no simple-minded fool
You’re the master of your fate
You’re the captain of your soul
Just treat your neighbor as yourself
And show your children how to love
Live your life and when it’s done
Give yourself to mother earth
